During their workshop a gathering of comic artists from the Netherlands, Hungary, Finland and Estonia will pay hommage to the latest honorary citizen of Budapest, to the King. To Elvis Presley. They will work together on a presentation in and with paper they can show the next day, during the festival (April 30).
The King has also been an inspiration to the show of the Dutch comic collective Lamelos: their work can be seen at kÁrton galéria, Alkotmány u. 18 in Budapest.

Grand master of the Ligne claire Joost Swarte (born 1947) carries his pencil with him at every step. Even after stowing away his luggage above his chair in a plane he has his pencil at hand. Not to draw any minute, it’s just good to have around. Swarte has been honored, laurelled and decorated for his work. He started his career as an underground artist; nowadays he is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. He makes comics, but also illustrations and design. And he is an architect too; among his creations are a theatre and private housing. But he does not shy away from telephone cards, labels, bags, stamps and stained glass either. There is nobody in the Netherlands who has never seen one of his designs. Watch out: at first glance the lines he draws are deceptively plain, but anyone who takes a better look will see an alternate reality.
About the exhibition in Loffice:
Joost Swarte art has many aspects: his influences are comics and industrial, architectural, graphic and typographic design. Swarte started out as a comic book artist but included industrial and architectural design in his work because of his background and general interest. Over the years he became ever more involved in projects featuring these artistic fields and connected everything to his interest in graphic design and typography. He designed many typefaces, all inspired by the Art Deco and Bauhaus periods and by architecture in general. Lately he has focused on graphic design such as icons, logos, lay-outs and book concepts.
Swarte's work has been exhibited often, but never with the specific topic of graphic design and typography in mind. In this exhibition the focus is not as usual on Swarte`s comic books, but on the way he works with typography, logos, icons, posters, books and many other aspects of graphic design – all in Swarte's characteristic and specific language. In this exhibition comic books are only featured as examples of his design skills.
About the content of this exhibition Swarte said: ‘I put so much time and energy in simplifying images to get to the core of the image. That is important to me and this exhibition will show that.’
The concept and design of the exhibition were made by Jan Kees Schelvis for the Grafisch Museum in the Dutch town of Groningen and will now be recreated in Budapest. His design has much in common to the visual language of Joost Swarte, both in style and function.

Nem mintha minden percben papírra akarná vetni egy ötletét, csupán jó tudni, hogy bármikor megteheti. Swarte számos elismerést és kitüntetést kapott munkájáért. Underground művészként kezdte karrierjét, ma pedig a The New Yorker rendszeresen foglalkoztatott rajzolója. Képregényeket készít, de illusztrátorként, tervezőként, sőt építészként is dolgozik – tervezett már színházat és lakóházat is. A budapesti Loffice-ban rendezendő kiállításról:

Képregény rajzolóként kezdte a pályafutását, de munkáiban megjelentek a tárgykultúra és az építészet elemei is. Egyre jobban és jobban elmerült e művészeti területekben, különösen a grafikus tervezés és a tipográfia mutatott lankadatlan érdeklődést. Számos betűtípust tervezett, melyeket az Art Deco és a Bauhaus, általánosan pedig az építészet ihletett. Mostanában ikonokat, logókat, látványterveket és könyveket tervez.
Számtalan kiállítása volt már, azonban ezek egyike sem szentelt figyelmet grafikai és tipográfiai munkásságára. A Budapesten bemutatásra kerülő anyag nem a képregényeire helyezi a hangsúlyt, hanem a tipográfiára – logókra, ikonokra, plakátokra és könyvekre – mind Swarte jellegzetes stílusában. A bemutatott képregények csupán művészi gazdagságát hivatottak jelezni.
E kiállításról mondta Swarte: „Rengeteg energiát fektetek abba, hogy a képeket a végletekig egyszerűsítsem, elérve azok lényegéhez. Számomra ez a fontos, és ezt a kiállítás is hűen tükrözi majd.”
A kiállítás, melynek koncepcióját és terveit Jan Kees Schelvis, a groningeni Grafikai Múzeum számára készítette el, most Budapestre érkezik, stílusában és funkciójában is illeszkedve Joost Swarte művészi nyelvezetéhez.

Typex (born 1962) is one of the most gifted comic artists from the Netherlands. Nick Cave thinks of him as one of the greatest artists in the Netherlands since Rembrandt – though that may be a tiny bit exaggerated. He attended art school in Amsterdam. He is both as an autonomous artist and a very popular illustrator. Most of his commissioned work is about pop music and cinema. For every commission he picks a different style: subject defines style. He also illustrates children’s books.
A lot of his comics have never been published in book form, like his satirical series Potpourri, a load of gossip about the pop music scene. For the newspaper NCR Handelsblad he reports in comics about festivals and concerts. He created his own magazine Chorizo and started to adapt the life of footballer and comic book hero Kick Wilstra, whose story was the story of the Netherlands in the twentieth century. This year he will be working for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on the graphic biography of Rembrandt van Rijn.
In the drawings on display in gallery Roham all his influences and interests come together: high- and lowbrow, pop culture and ‘real’ art. In his shop he works – free from deadlines and editors – for long spells, accompanied by very loud music that can only be interrupted by the ringing of Amsterdam streetcars, on his big format drawings about subjects that attract him. That can be Eros & Thanatos, but also chewing gum & bonbons. He records his fascinations with pastel and charcoal and dubs them Death to Cubism, Technicolor ends here and other whimsical names.
His charcoal drawings were exhibited in May 2010 in Barcelona and in July 2010 in Amsterdam.

Typex (1962) az egyik legtehetségesebb holland képregényrajzoló. Nick Cave szerint Rembrandt óta a legnagyobb holland művészek egyike – bár ez talán túlzás. Az amszterdami művészeti iskola után szabadúszó képregény rajzolóként és illusztrátorként lett népszerű. A legtöbb megbízása popzenei és filmes témájú, ő pedig minden egyes feladathoz más és más stílust választ – a téma határozza meg, milyet. Emellett gyermekkönyveket illusztrál.
Számos képregénye nem jelent meg nyomtatásban, mint a szatirikus Potpourri sorozata sem, amely a popzenei színtérről kínál pletykákat. Az újságban képregényekben számol be fesztiválokról és koncertekről. Chorizo címmel saját magazint indított, amelyben a futballozó képregényhős, Kick Wilstra életét mutatta be, akinek történetén keresztül egyben Hollandia 20. századi történelmének főbb momentumait is felvillantotta. Typex idén az amszterdami Rijksmuseumban, Rembrandt van Rijn életrajzán dolgozik.
A Roham galériában kiállítandó rajzain minden rá jellemző főbb vonás felismerhető – cizellált és hétköznapi, popkultúra és „igazi” művészet. Ha a műhelyében – határidőktől és szerkesztőktől nem zavartatva – szorgoskodik, teljes hangerőn szól a zene, amit csak az amszterdami villamosok csilingelése zavar meg. Nagy méretben készülnek az általa érdekesnek tartott tematikájú alkotások, legyen szó érzéki szerelemről, halálról, rágógumiról vagy bonbonokról. Pasztell- és szénrajzokon rögzíti vízióit, majd olyan hóbortos címekkel látja el őket, mint Halál a kubizmusra vagy Itt ér véget a színes széles vászon.
Szénrajzaiból 2010 májusában Barcelonában, majd júliusban Amszterdamban nyílt kiállítás.
